Conference: European crisis management in Africa

Comparing experiences from Libya and South Sudan

In 2003, the European Union (EU) launched its first crisis management mission. Since then, it has launched more than 30 missions and operations under the framework of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). However, these missions and operations have not always been successful or able to fulfil their mandates (especially in Africa).

There are essential reasons for this, which this research seminar will be addressing. Some of the most significant factors for a mission or operation’s failure or limited effect can be identified already at the drawing board. Therefore, in order to improve the EU’s overall impact on future conflict prevention, it is essential that the Union learn from its operational shortcomings.

The aim of this research seminar is to identify successes and failures, using these to draw conclusions and present policy recommendations to help improve future effectiveness of EU capabilities in conflict prevention and crisis management.

On behalf of the IECEU Project - Improving the Effectiveness of Capabilities in EU Conflict Prevention and the Royal Danish Defence College, it is a great pleasure to invite you to the research seminar titled European crisis management in Africa: comparing experiences from Libya and South Sudan. The seminar will take place on December 7th 2017 at Kornloftet, located at Kastellet in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The research seminar will be conducted in English.
