No silver bullet solution to the regional conﬂict between Afghanistan and Pakistan will surface in the immediate future through a top-down approach.
The Royal Danish Defence College and the Regional Peace Institute have therefore in collaboration developed the ‘Afghanistan-Pakistan Dialogue’ project, which has resulted in two seminars in Kabul and Islamabad. The purpose of the dialogue project is to identify opportunities for improvement of the two countries’ bilateral relations by affecting the political establishment from below.
The brief outlines findings from the second seminar, which was held in Islamabad from September 12-13, 2017. Delegates from the two countries and international experts met to discuss challenges and opportunities for bilateral reconciliation.
The brief provides policy recommendations for Afghanistan, Pakistan and the international community based on the dialogue in the areas of the international community’s engagement in Afghanistan, China’s role in the region, the need for educational reforms in the two countries as well as the way ahead for peace negotiations between Afghanistan’s government and the Taliban.
